Winterize Your Lawn

This is the time of year where we are just accepting that summer time is over, and the cooler weather starts to move in....BUT folks we live in Colorado, so we can have temps in the 90's and before we know it we are getting snow. Here are some tips to be sure your lawn and your home are ready....

Start with deciding if you will do the work yourself or hire a landscaping company. A good first step is to rake the yard and remove all debris. Next it is good to to Aerate your lawn. This will help the grass to absorb more nutrients and water. The next thing to do is to apply a winterizing fertilizer, this helps to strengthen the roots. Do you have flower beds? For any bulbs, or fall planting done, be sure to cover these beds with a layer of burlap to protect them during harsh winter weather. Clean out all gutters around your house. Finally and very importantly be sure to shut off all outside water sources, have the sprinkling system blown out and disconnect all outside hoses. Failure to do these things could very well lead to a pipe bursting.

OK so that takes care of the outside, what about inside? First, have your furnace serviced and inspected. You will want to be sure the filter is replaced and be sure the pilot light and thermostat are working properly. Get a chimney sweep for wood burning fireplaces, and be sure the flue is closed when not in use. Be sure windows and entryways are sealed to keep critters out and warmth in. There are kits you can purchase from your local home store to help seal up drafty windows. Now is also a good time to be sure smoke, and carbon monoxide detectors are in good shape, as well as checking you fire extinguishers. Be sure to have an emergency kit with flashlights and candles with matches, as well as plenty of canned foods and water in case of an emergency like a power outage etc.

Now that that is out of the way, enjoy the beautiful Autumn Season and rest easy knowing you are prepared!
